Edmonton -½ +105 over Washington

8:05 PM EST. Regulation only. The Capitals have been a team we have targeted this season, and we’re not going to let up. Washington is a mess right now after four straight losses and when the losing starts like that, it can be hard to pull up your nose. More recently, losing to Detroit and Arizona in their last two games has the Caps spinning their tires. The Stanley Cup-winning goaltender they added to the mix, Darcy Kuemper, stopped just 23 of 26 shots against the Coyotes. He was out-dueled by Karel Vejmelka (AZ) and Ville Husso (DET) in those games. Kuemper was supposed to be the big missing piece that was going to allow the Capitals to go on one last run with Alex Ovechkin, but so far, he’s been a nothing burger, posting a 4-5 record and a .919 save percentage, which ranks him just 16th among goalies with four or more starts this season. Edmonton, with its unlimited firepower, is the last team Washington wants to see in its current form.

The Oilers were shelled last time out at home against the Stars, dropping a 6-2 decision on Saturday night. That was Edmonton’s second loss in a row, as they were downed by New Jersey last Thursday. We’re not going to sugarcoat those defeats, but we will point out that the Devils are elite and Dallas caught Edmonton in a bad spot. You seem it’s cold as f**k in Alberta these days and perhaps the Oil were just looking forward to getting the hell out of the three feet of snow and the sub-zero temperatures. We kid some, but not really. How good would it feel right now to split in the dead of a Western Canadian winter and head to Washington D.C. (where it’s 80F) and then down to Florida and Carolina for the weekend?

Back to the business on the ice. There is little doubt that after two losses in a row, the Oilers will be locked in tonight and determined to get this three-game road trip started on the right foot. The last time the Oilers went out on a three game trip, they won all three, which included wins in St. Louis and Calgary. Even when Edmonton is off its game (highly unlikely here), it has the best player in the world and is capable of hanging a crooked number on any given night. When the Oilers are locked in, watch the hell out.
