NFL Divisional Round
Detroit Lions -8½ over Washington Commanders
Ford Field – Detroit, MI
8:15 PM ET. The Commanders are riding high after last week’s 23-20 upset win over Tampa Bay, their first playoff victory since January 2006. That win also extended their current win streak to six games, and rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels has become the toast of the town. But this week, the Commanders run into a buzzsaw in Detroit, where the Lions have been nothing short of dominant.
Yes, the Commanders are on a roll, but momentum can be misleading. Their six-game win streak has been fueled by a soft schedule and some late-game heroics. Daniels has impressed as a rookie, showing poise in critical moments, but Ford Field on a Saturday night in January is a far cry from Raymond James Stadium or the comfortable confines of FedExField. Daniels faces a Lions defense that allowed the fewest third-down conversions in the NFL this season, even with multiple injuries across their roster. Detroit’s aggressive man-to-man coverage will challenge Daniels in ways he hasn’t yet experienced, particularly with a patchwork offensive line protecting him.
The Lions are a team built for these moments. Jared Goff has been spectacular down the stretch, throwing 17 touchdown passes over his past six games. The return of David Montgomery from injury only adds to an already formidable offense that features Jahmyr Gibbs, who has been a game-breaking force all season. Together, this backfield tandem has combined for 28 rushing touchdowns, and their versatility forces defenses to stay honest. Washington’s defense, while respectable, will be hard-pressed to keep up, especially if the Lions dictate the tempo early.
At Ford Field, Detroit has been a juggernaut, averaging 39.4 points per game over their past seven home contests. They’ve covered five straight games as home favorites of nine or more points and have consistently shown the ability to blow inferior teams out of the building. Washington, meanwhile, has struggled in this type of role. The Commanders are just 2-6 in their past eight playoff games as underdogs and will need a near-perfect game to keep this one close.
