New England +6½ -110 over Jacksonville
9:30 AM EST. Here's yet another bleary-eyed London game to appease no one back in the NFL's actual market, let alone the 6:30 AM start time on the West Coast. The 1-5 Jaguars lost Week 6 in London against the Bears. The Jags only win was by three-points over the Colts, which prevented a winless season thus far. The 1-5 Patriots have dropped all games since their shocking season opening win against the Bengals.
The Patriots have been competitive in a couple of games thanks to trap situations or facing the offense-less Dolphins and Jets. The change to Drake Maye could make a material difference the rest of the season since Jacoby Brissett was a disaster as the starter and Maye's debut featured more yardage and three times the scoring than any Brissett game. That alone should cement his place for the rest of the season, though it is not unusual for a rookie quarterback to look his best in the first game when there was nothing on tape for the defense to prepare against. At least we know that the Patriots have zero expectations and they play hard.
Meanwhile, the Jaguars will be acclimated to the time and place, having stayed in England for the last week, and that will be an advantage. At least that’s what you’re going to read and hear about but let us provide you with another possibility.
Let’s say you are 1-5 and have a few million dollars in your pocket. Now let’s say you get to go overseas for two weeks away from the wives/girlfriends/kids/family. We highly doubt the undisciplined Jags are in their hotel rooms at night texting their friends. The more likely scenario is that they’re having a ball, especially Trevor Lawrence who has 142M in his pocket and cares more about his locks than his performance.
That’s right, the Jags gave Lawrence $142 million in guaranteed money this offseason, largely because they’ve never known what competent quarterback play looks like. Let’s marvel, together, at this man’s astonishing skills, shall we? Man, is he god-awful. Things were already bad enough with a 1-5 record and an offense that has sputtered every week. Then they were waxed before an international audience of 35-16 by the Bears in London. The Jags safety Andre Cisco then splashed a little gasoline on the already smoldering defense when he accused players of quitting during the loss. He said that the players were prepared well enough for the games, but that some players just quit when the going gets tough, which is pretty often in the world of the Jaguars. That smacks of a coach who lost his team, and HC Doug Pederson hardly needed any more heat on his seat.
Incidentally, Trent John Baalke is still in charge of personnel in Jacksonville. The man who brought the NFL both Urban Meyer AND head coach Jim Tomsula is still allowed to make important decisions for a franchise??? The Jags are a fu**ing joke and now they’re being asked to win by a margin? We’ll pass on that.
