N.Y. Giants +6½ over Seattle

4:25 PM EST. Considering it’s the spooky season, there are some eerie similarities between these two teams heading into this Week 5 affair, at least from a situational stance. The Giants played a prime-time game on Thursday Night Football, opening the week against the Cowboys and losing a 5-point ball game, 20-15, while the Seahawks closed out the week on Monday Night Football in Detroit, dropping a 42-29 decision to the Lions. Looking ahead to next week, both of these teams host prime-time games, with the Seahawks welcoming NFC West division rival San Francisco, and the Bengals visiting the G-Men in the Swamp on Monday Night Football.

Hosting a prime-time game can be a situation where a team may “look ahead” to such a high-profile opportunity, showcasing themselves in front of the football world. It would be easy to just eliminate this joint scenario with both squads playing in stand-alone games in Week 6, but in this case, there is an argument to be made that the Seachickens could be more prone to such a fate, as their game is against the preseason favorite to win the division—San Fran. Coming into Week 5, Seattle is in first place in the West, and a win over the ‘Niners would make an early statement and put them in the driver's seat for that division title.

As for the Giants, they are 1-3 and licking their wounds while taking a ton of criticism from all sides—from the New York and national media. Daniel Jones is a bum, and head coach Brian Daboll should be tarred, feathered, and paraded down the Jersey Turnpike. The Giants' names are “mud” at the moment, and they are not looking ahead to anybody. If anything, they’ve had extra time to prepare for this game, while the Seahawks come in on a short week.

We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention the status of Giants’ standout rookie WR Malik Neighbors, who snagged two TDs on TNF before leaving that game with a concussion. Neighbors said he was “all good” after that blow, but his return is unknown at this moment. His likely absence will only drive the market further toward the Seahawks, as there will be an overreaction to his injury. It’s not like the books didn’t know he probably wasn’t going to play, and they still posted the game under a key number.

To that point, also working here is the opening number of +6½, which is an “underdog” number because the prospect of making a trip to the pay window if the ‘Chickens win by a converted touchdown is going to be very enticing. Seattle may have lost on Monday Night Football, but they didn’t lose any juice in the process, as their offense was firing on all cylinders. Compare that to the Giants and their 15 measly points, and it’s easy to see how simple it is to make a case that this is a monumental mismatch. However, rarely is it that easy.

Seattle may win and cover this game, but there is a premium to be paid to back them in this spot. This game checks many boxes, and if the Giants don’t cover, so be it, but everything points to them being competitive. They have a huge chip on their shoulders, plenty of locker room fodder from the tabloids back home, and a fallen teammate to rally around. If the Seahawks don’t see the kitchen sink from the G-Men, Daboll and company might as well stay in the Pacific Northwest, build a cabin in the woods, and start looking for Bigfoot because nobody is going to be looking for them.
