Tennessee over Miami
7:30 PM EST. There are many moving pieces here on both sides, but most notable is the Dolphins' quarterback room, which will now send Tyler Huntley under center because of injuries to both starters Tua Tagovailoa and backup Skylar Thompson, who started last week’s 24-6 loss in Seattle. The Dolphins had high expectations this season and were expected to compete for a division title, which is why they are likely getting some action from the market in advance of this prime-time game.
Perhaps Huntley can spark a dormant attack, but that’s a lot to ask of a third-string QB who was signed just two weeks ago off the Ravens' practice squad and leapfrogged former third-stringer Tim Boye to get the nod as the starter this week—a position he didn’t know he’d be in until Saturday.
Further fueling the Dolphins’ fire in the market is the perception that the Fish are out for “revenge” after a late-season game in Week 14 last year when they played the Titans, also on Monday Night Football. In case you forgot, don’t worry, running back Raheem Mostert has not, saying that “Everybody knows” what happened last year, with his running mate Jeff Wilson being a little more specific about what was lost: “We could have been a No. 1 seed, a division champ, the whole nine yards. We had everything in front of us, and they took that from us. It is hard to forget.” As for what went down in that game, the Dolphins were 9-3 and riding a three-game winning streak with a 27-13 lead with four and a half minutes to go. The Dolphins needed one stop or a few first downs to close out the game, but they didn’t get it, as the Titans first drove 75 yards for a major and then forced a three-and-out to get the ball back with 2:15 to go. Four plays and 26 seconds later, the Titans were back in the end zone, taking a 28-27 lead. It was one of the worst collapses in franchise history, and it started a downward spiral that saw the Fish go 2-5 the rest of the way before getting blasted 26-7 by the Chiefs in Kansas City in the Wild Card round. Oh, what could have been. While the “revenge” narrative makes for good fodder for the talking heads and is eaten up by the market like candy, it’s an old, tired angle.
The Titans are 0-3 both straight up and against the spread under their new regime, and last week’s 30-14 home loss to the Packers stung more than most, as former Titans QB Malik Willis, who was traded for a seventh-rounder prior to the season, marched back into Nashville and led Green Bay to the win over his former team. The man who was tabbed to replace Willis, Will Levis, threw two interceptions to rub salt in the wound. Levis has been roasted for his propensity to turn the ball over, as he cost the Titans their Week 1 game in Chicago with a game-losing pick-six. In three games, Levis has thrown five picks and lost three fumbles, and there is a buzz that the Titans are going to be in need of another new franchise pivot if this year goes bust. We all know that it’s almost impossible to win if you lose the turnover battle, but not all of those mishaps are Levis’ fault, and over time, those bad breaks usually even out. That’s not to say it will happen tonight, but Levis and the Titans' stock is in the toilet. Now would not be the time to fade the Titans—now would be the time to step in and back them because the Dolphins are not in a position to be favored over anyone right now. Keep the points, Titans outright is our call.
