Cleveland +3 over Jacksonville
1:00 PM EST. The Jaguars may have blown a double-digit lead in their Week 1 game in Miami, but considering they went on the road and covered the -3½-point spread, losing that game on a 52-yard field goal, they didn’t likely lose too much market appeal. That said, this play isn’t about fading the Jags, but rather about a team that, just one game into the season, looks to be a total mess both on and off the field. However, that perception presents an opportunity for us to once again fade market sentiment and overreactions.
Not all losses are created equal, but after Week 1, the Browns are the poster boys for what a “bad loss” looks like after getting belted, 33-17, by the Cowboys at home in Cleveland. $200-million man QB Deshaun Watson was brutal, with the ‘Boys defense picking him off twice, sacking him six times, and limiting him to just 169 yards and one TD. If his Sunday afternoon wasn’t bad enough, on Monday, Watson was slapped with yet another sexual assault lawsuit for an alleged violent incident said to have taken place four years ago when Watson was still in Houston. You may recall that Watson was suspended for a significant period prior to making his Browns debut in 2022, missing 11 games after 24 claims of sexual misconduct were alleged against him.
Market perception of the Browns is taking a nosedive, but there has been an overreaction to both their loss to Dallas and another lawsuit being filed against their QB. Watson has had legal drama hanging over him for years, and it appears to roll off him like water on a duck’s back. The Browns were a -2½-point favorite over Dallas, a Super Bowl contender in the NFC, and now they take a big step down in competition in Week 2. If the Browns were good enough to be favored at home versus the mighty Cowboys, they are good enough to be favored on the road in Jacksonville, too.
