Carolina +5 over L.A. Chargers
1:00 PM EST. The season could not have started much worse for the Panthers, as they took their new-look offense on the road to New Orleans, where they were embarrassed 47-10. There is not much good to say about a game in which the Panthers were down 30-3 at halftime, but such a dismal effort and result have had a significant impact on Carolina’s stock. The Cats had received some positive attention with the new additions tasked with bringing QB Bryce Young along in his development, but those positive vibes were washed away in about 6 minutes of game action. If you held a ticket on Carolina last week, that ticket was dead about 1:15 PM EST. That leaves a foul taste in one’s mouth.
Meanwhile, the Chargers made a “statement” under new head coach Jim Harbaugh, as he led the Bolts to a 22-10 win over rival Las Vegas. There is a clip of Harbaugh pumping up his team after the game that has made the rounds, with the talking heads slobbering all over just how much the Bolts have already “bought in” on his schtick, but we’re not going to let one game take us off our “bearish” stance on the Chargers. Winning makes everything look easy, and until the Chargers lose a game or two, we won’t really know just how that group will handle adversity under their new coach.
In that win over the Raiders, the Chargers were not that impressive, as they had 11 first downs to Vegas’ 14, with Justin Herbert going 17-of-26 for 144 yards and one touchdown. Newly signed runner J.K. Dobbins did rack up 135 yards on the ground, but 61 of those yards came on one big play. What led the Chargers to victory were blunders by the Raiders, who turned the ball over three times, while L.A. did not turn the ball over once. If you win the turnover battle 3-0, you are supposed to win the game. However, if the Chargers play this week like they did last week, they could be in tough because they are now spotting inflated points based on Week 1’s results.
