After 14 years of HC Pete Carroll, the Seahawks moved on to HC Mike Macdonald (ex-Ravens defensive coordinator) and OC Ryan Grubb who ran the offense for the University of Washington for the last two years and made them into an offensive juggernaut. Grubb inherits an offense that returns almost entirely intact from 2023 but so what. You see, the Seachickens were no better than average in any position last year. Geno Smith was a surprise in 2022 when he became a productive quarterback after a career of being an itinerant backup. He regressed in 2023 so why should we trust him and the Seahawks spotting significant points here in Week 1 after they went 9-8 in 2023, which would be the equivalent of going 4-13 in a real conference. An XFL team could go 9-8 if it had the Seahawks’ 2023 schedule, which included games against the Commanders, Giants, Panthers and two against the Cardinals. We’ll just sit back, take the points and watch people tiptoe around calling Geno anything other than wildly replaceable.

HC Sean Payton returned to the NFL and the outlook on the Broncos is still lower than most. The rebuild that started last year was extended into roster moves for this season, including the loss of Jerry Jeudy and Russell Wilson. The rookie Bo Nix hits the ground running as the Week 1 starter and a new direction is set. Russell Wilson added to the lengthy and ugly list of failed quarterbacks for the Broncos since John Elway retired in 1999. Nix was the sixth quarterback drafted this year and yet still cost the Broncos their 1.12 pick. He is more mature than many, having played five years between Auburn and Oregon.

We’re not high on the Broncs but this choice is not about Denver. This choice is all about fading a team that is one of the biggest favorites on the board in Week 1 that hasn’t done anything to warrant this badge of honor. It’s an overlay to be sure.
