Philadelphia +3 over New England
7:00 PM EST. We pride ourselves on identifying and analyzing week-to-week overreactions in the NFL, and the preseason is no different. Week 1 of the preseason saw New England lay -6 points at home to the Panthers in a game the Patriots won easily, 17-3. There has been massive turnover in New England, with a new coaching staff tasked with turning things around, and it was a rookie QB who stood out in Week 1—just not the one everyone thought it would be. Third overall pick Drake Maye went 2/3 for 19 yards in limited time, but it was sixth-round pick Joe Milton who shined, throwing for 54 yards and a touchdown on 4/6 passing. Now, we're not saying that Milton isn’t capable of playing at the NFL level, but the dude probably could have done without the many comparisons he got to another famous former 6th-rounder, Thomas Edward Brady Jr.; however, such is life under the white-hot spotlight at Foxboro.
The market perception here is that not only does Eagles coach Nick Sirianni not care about the preseason (he’s 2-6), but he also might not be on the same page with starting QB Jalen Hurts. That said, the Eagles went on the road last week to Baltimore (a team that loves to win preseason football games) and knocked off the Ravens, 16-13. While Hurts is the no-doubt starter, he may have a fire lit under his ass with former first-rounder Kenny Pickett coming over from the Steelers. Pickett looked pretty good in his Eagles debut, going 14/22 for 89 yards and a touchdown. That #2 job in Philly is not locked in, by the way, as Tanner McKee is also looking to make his mark after playing 39 snaps last week in Baltimore.
Considering the newfound hype surrounding the Patriots and the perception that the Eagles are not invested in the preseason with bigger fish to fry, this line looks short, but we doubt the oddsmakers missed out on the Milton hype and the performance of the Patriots defense, which was pitching a shutout until the final two minutes when the Panthers decided to kick a 41-yard field goal so as not to post a goose egg. Perhaps the Patriots win and cover again easily here at home, but the Eagles are not the Panthers, not even in the preseason. The step up in competition is real, and oddsmakers figure the Eagles will give the Patriots more trouble than the Cats did. We agree.
