Tennessee -6 over San Francisco
7:00 PM EST. A number like this with two teams who are polar opposites in market perception this season. The 49ers are a Super Bowl contender, while the Titans are rebuilding under a new coaching regime after Mike Vrabel was somewhat unexpectedly fired and replaced with Brian Callahan in the offseason. Callahan’s last post was with the Bengals as their offensive coordinator, and he’ll no doubt want to put his stamp on this team early and often, as this is his first head coaching opportunity and that includes this dress rehearsal.
With Vrabel out and an offensive specialist at the helm, the Titans' defense is getting a new coat of paint, too, with first-time defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson taking over that unit. His hiring has already paid off by way of Pro Bowl safety Quandre Diggs citing Wilson’s hiring as a big reason why he signed with the Titans. Wilson is a former player, which players love, and he’s paid his dues by working most recently with the Ravens as their defensive backs coach and the Eagles in that same role when they went to Super Bowl LVII. Fun fact: both of those defensive units in those seasons led the league in sacks with Wilson’s boys patrolling the back end. There’s so much to say about Wilson and what this Titans defense could be this season, but we’ll save that for another day. Just know that they should be uber-aggressive if they take on Wilson’s personality.
As for the 49ers, they roll into this first exhibition game with a skeleton crew that will feature no stars, and we don’t blame them. When you have a Super Bowl-caliber team, you don’t want to piss away that opportunity by running Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel, or George Kittle out there to potentially be injured, especially when all have had injury issues in the past. As for head coach Kyle Shanahan’s approach to the preseason, he’s 11-10 overall and 11-9-1 against the spread (ATS). That said, this is about as nothing as a game can be for a team, and the 49ers need this road game in Tennessee like they need a hole in the head. Meanwhile, the Titans figure to throw the kitchen sink at San Fran in hopes of setting the right tone for a new regime that is in search of a new identity. The line here tells the whole story, and we’re listening.
