Carolina +2½-110 over Washington

1:00 PM EST. Sadly the “Football Team” is out and the very blandly named “Commanders” of Washington are in. It’s a shame really, but we’ll save that hot take for another day. Instead, let’s focus on the task at hand.

The Commanders are one of the few teams to not hold joint practices and so they have not yet lined up against anyone other than their locker room brethren. Does that matter? We’ll find out soon, but the more looks one sees cannot be a bad thing. Head coach Ron Rivera said Thursday that he wants to "See some consistency out there," so the Washington starters will play between 15-20 plays. Rivera also said we’d get a look at new starting quarterback Carson Wentz along with the Commanders' other two pivots.

Carolina will have a new quarterback this season with Baker Mayfield making his way down from Cleveland, and if there is a pivot with more to prove than Mayfield this season we don’t know who it is. Nobody wants to get fired, but when you are replaced by an accused sexual predator, who is facing a year-long suspension, that sting just might hurt a little more and linger a lot longer.

This is year three for Carolina coach Matt Rhule, whose team is coming off a disappointing 5-12 record in 2021. However, when you consider that the Panthers were without their franchise player, Christian McCaffery, for most of the year, that record is a little more forgivable. Also, consider the Cats lost six of those games by one score or less. There is a very fine line between winning and losing in the NFL.
