In the case of Old Dominion vs. Georgia Southern, our read is that the market is placing a heavy emphasis on the results that the Eagles have fostered exclusively.

Georgia Southern enters into this contest at 5-2, coming in off a 28-14 victory against James Madison in Statesboro just five days ago as a 10-point underdog. Though the Monarchs defeated Texas State in Norfolk last Saturday as a 10.5-point pooch, the market is infatuated with Georgia Southern’s recent accomplishment, as James Madison has a much higher market standing since they hung 70 points on North Carolina earlier this season in Chapel Hill. JMU was also the team that had an undefeated run deep into 2023 that saw the Dukes host College Gameday, thus a victory over such a side will gain more clout. Comparatively speaking, Texas State is just another Sun Belt team. Moreover, Georgia Southern also went muzzle-to-muzzle with Boise State to kick off the regular season and this result has aged like wine, as the Broncos are favored by many to be the Group of Five representative in the College Football Playoff, they boast the services of a Heisman frontrunner, and presently sit #15 in the polls.

We now must question why the Monarchs are favored on a Thursday night prime time game. Georgia Southern has a more attractive win-loss record compared to Old Dominion who sits at 3-4. Also, this game will not fly under the radar, thus oddsmakers are dangling the proverbial carrot in front of you.

A closer look under the hood will reveal that Old Dominion’s 3-4 record could be 6-1, as three of their four losses were by eight points or less, which includes road games at Coastal Carolina, at South Carolina, and hosting ECU. ODU’s other loss this season came at home hosting Virginia Tech but retrospectively speaking, losing to the Hokies would be considered an honor, as they could easily be a ranked one-loss outfit had the bounces gone their way. It is worth noting that against Coastal Carolina and East Carolina, the Monarchs were within striking range well into the fourth quarter and at South Carolina, Old Dominion led the Gamecocks at the beginning of the fourth quarter before Carolina would escape with a 23-19 win. Considering that Cocky had LSU on the ropes in Columbia in September, nearly beat Alabama two weeks ago, and whacked Oklahoma in Norman last week, ODU’s win over the Gamecocks should speak volumes into the potential that this Monarchs team has to offer. Georgia Southern will be a step down in opposition comparatively and the best part is we are getting the Monarchs at a reduced price because of the market’s fascination with records and results.
