For the second straight week, we see the unranked Mountaineers taking back a short tag against another ranked opponent and we are “sticking with it”, as we are sure that West Virginia is taking back an even more enhanced price this week after last week’s 28-16 defeat at the hands of #9 Iowa State when WVU was priced in the same range. To that point, we would be remiss to believe that the linesmakers are offering a gift here, as they are adept to what transpired last week when another ranked side cashed a ticket with relative ease and the penchant for the market to double down against West Virginia again in this spot is that much greater. The number presented here is a sign of respect for the hosts and should be a warning sign to those that wish to get behind K-State here.

We can recapitulate to you the profile of West Virginia as a battle-tested bunch who after Iowa State have now played two teams who are in the Top 10 presently along with undefeated Penn State who is ranked currently, and two teams that were ranked at one point this season in Kansas and Pitt; this accounts for five of the six games that the Mountaineers have participated in season to date and speak into the quality that this side has encountered.

Though Kansas State is ranked #17 at the moment, it could be a 3-3 team like West Virginia is as quickly as any, as they trailed by 10 on the road early in the season at Tulane and were forced to rally. The Wildcats had to survive Colorado last week in Boulder in a game that it could have easily lost had Coach Prime not found a way to lead his team to beat themselves. Against one common opponent this season, Kansas State beat Oklahoma State 42-20 in Manhattan on September 28th while West Virginia defeated Oklahoma State 38-14 in Stillwater on October 5th, the week thereafter. While this is no metric for determining the outcome of this game, the point we are trying to make here is that West Virginia is able to produce similar results to Kansas State in a distinct scenario which suggests that these two teams are more comparable to each other than there is any clear discrepancy in competitive quality.

Had Kansas State lost the two games we mentioned previously, they would likely be the underdog here heading into Morgantown but by virtue of the market’s obsession with results and rankings, the Wildcats have been installed as the favorite in what is essentially a 50/50 proposition which cues us to move in on the Mountaineers. Strong play here.
