12:00 PM EST. We are always on the lookout for numbers that look fishy, and this is one of those instances. Allow us to recap the profile of this Boston College Eagles’ team. The Eagles were a 16.5-point public underdog against a then-ranked Florida State team and defeated the Seminoles 28-13 in Tallahassee. BC would smoke FCS Duquesne 56-0 as a 35.5-point choice. They were a 14.5-point underdog in Columbia, Missouri against a top-10 ranked Mizzou squad and nearly upset the Tigers in their own stead. Boston College then defeated Michigan State in which they were a five-point choice and finally, it was favored by 7½ playing host to Western Kentucky last week, in which BC had to rally and piece together a 14-point rally in the final quarter to escape with a 21-20 win. How on Earth is Boston College an underdog against Virginia?
We appreciate that the Cavaliers are 3-1 on the year, but who exactly has Virginia beat? Coastal Carolina (A name more than a threat at this point), Richmond (an FCS team), and Wake Forest by a point where UVA had to pull the same stunt BC did against Western Kentucky and rally by 14 in the fourth quarter. Against perhaps the most quality side that Virginia faced, Maryland, the Cavaliers got whacked at home 27-13. Very simply, the line makes no sense, as Boston College was ranked at one point this season, they beat a ranked side, and lost to a Top-10 opponent on the road in an SEC environment. Boston College looks like the sucker bet of the week and we simply cannot overlook that.
In his third season as Head Coach, Tony Elliot has matched the mark his team reached in the past two seasons, as the Cavs have gone no better than 3-9 in 2022 or 2023. We highlight this because the Hoos have zero market credibility compared to Boston College who has a far more prominent position in the market’s eyes by virtue of their recent exploits.
The Cavs boast an efficient and methodical offense anchored by a rushing attack that generates 195 yards per game. UVA’s approach is to play keep away and throw body blows to slow down their opposition and it is worth noting that last week Boston College was out-rushed, outgained, and held the ball less than Western Kentucky. A series of costly errors by the Hilltoppers enabled the Eagles to escape, which further illustrates that Boston College may be regressing back to the mean. The oddsmakers are taking a clear stance in support of BC being somewhat fraudulent and we’re taking note.
