Who would ever thought that the Florida State Seminoles, a team who last year was tragically grubbed from the College Football Playoff and also started off this season ranked in the Top 10 and as a favorite to represent the ACC in the postseason would be taking back nearly a converted touchdown against the likes of SMU? We can almost guarantee that if we told many that this would be the case just over a month ago, that we would be catching all sorts of looks but as a result of Florida State’s cataclysmic descent in stock, that is what we have presented here.

SMU treated weeknight viewers to some nationally televised blowouts last year of North Texas and Temple, outgaining those foes by a whopping 650 yards. Last week, SMU hung 66 points on TCU, a known program with market credibility. This is a fast, physical, athletic roster, and all three phases are explosive and dangerous. SMU is also self-destructive at times.

SMU narrowly escaped Nevada 29-24 in the final minute of play despite giving the Wolf Pack 27 points when they hosted them in Week Zero. As a 12.5-point choice against BYU in Dallas, the Ponies would fall 18-15. The Mustangs' warts have been on display in all four games this season: too many penalties, boneheaded mistakes and discipline issues. The team often plays fast and hard but not smart, and the offense is prone to lulls and occasional wasted possessions. The Mustangs are dangerous to themselves and others, and while they'll explode and rout a few more teams this year, we aren't trusting them with our money especially after a 66-point outburst last week. There are lofty expectations, especially regarding the explosive talent on offense, and the gaudy blowout last week is only fueling them. SMU is now being asked to spot a price to a team nobody ever thought they would be spotting a price to and while the expected athleticism has been on display, indications are that the maturity, discipline and consistency are sketchy enough to run from investing. Take the 6 points if you like but we’re going in for the kill. State outright is the call.
