This is the first game back for NIU since they pulled off what undoubtedly was the biggest upset of the 2024-25 College Football Season when they went to South Bend, Indiana as a 28-point underdog to pull off what could be one of the greatest upsets in college football history when it defeated Notre Dame 16-14 by way of a blocked field goal as time expired. The victory was ripe with emotion, as it saw Head Coach Thomas Hammock reduced to tears in the post-game interview along with a bandit charge of Huskies losing their minds as they silenced over 77,000 fans. Sounds poetic doesn’t it?

The triumph is program-defining for NIU, as it was their first win ever over a top-five opponent and now they have emerged in the Top 25. The Huskies have had a long two weeks to bask in the glow of their accolades and now they are tasked with getting over the hangover against a team who won just three games last year and whose best win this year came against UMass. Yeah, not quite the Irish.

Since that fateful Saturday, Notre Dame went on to smash Purdue by a score of 66-7 in West Lafayette last week. When you couple Notre Dame’s destruction of the Boilermakers with their win to kick off the season in Aggieland against a ranked Texas A&M, the Northern Illinois victory looks that much more impressive. As a result, the appeal of NIU is that much greater as the market is foaming at the mouth to get behind the Huskies here. The fact that Northern Illinois has won nine of the last 10 meetings between those two sides doesn’t hurt its market appeal in this one either. That’s where we step in, as we are always on the lookout for recent results and trends that make teams all the more prone to be extremely overvalued. NIU fits the bill.

Buffalo meanwhile will come into DeKalb chomping at the bit while Northern Illinois may still be caught up in the fanfare of what is the most iconic win in the history of NIU athletics. The campus heroes are in a massive letdown spot here. Essentially in one week of results, NIU goes from a nameless hunter to a huge target.
