Illinois +7½ over Nebraska

We’ll start with Illinois because this play has little to do with the Illini; however, it’s worth noting that they are off to a 3-0 start, which includes a signature win over Kansas in Week 2 as a +6½ point underdog. Illinois beat Central Michigan 30-9 last week, but the Illini did not cover the 21-point spread, so they sit at 2-0-1 against the number after also shutting out Eastern Illinois 45-0 as -28½-point chalk. Illinois comes into this game ranked #24 in the country.

The Cornhuskers are college football royalty, and they are off to a 3-0 start both straight up and against the spread (ATS), while also cracking the Top 25 in Week 3 and climbing to #22 after a 34-3 drubbing of Northern Iowa. As impressive as the start is on paper, in reality, the ‘Huskers have played a weak schedule that also includes dates with Colorado and UTEP. The Buffaloes have a high profile, but they are ranked 56th in the power rankings. For the record, UTEP is ranked 155 and Northern Iowa is 147.

The anticipation of this game in Lincoln has been palpable, as the school canceled classes today so the campus could be ready to rock and roll in prime time. We’re sure the student body appreciates the extra time to tailgate, but all the pomp and circumstance surrounding the game is a huge distraction, and much of it is self-inflicted. Nebraska is back on the national scene for the first time in a long time, and there is a premium to be paid for backing them in this high-profile, standalone spot. Meanwhile, this is a business trip for Illinois, and it should be treated as such. Make no mistake, this is a game that Illinois can win outright; however, we’ll gladly take the inflated points and hope we don’t need them.
