Oklahoma State has been pegged by some analysts as one of the favorites to win the Big 12 this year, a conference pieced together of hodgepodge teams originating from the defunct Pac-12, mid-majors, and remnants of original constituents who hadn’t left for the SEC or B1G. Cough, cough: Texas, Oklahoma, Mizzou, Nebraska, and A&M. With this prognostication, it is very easy to buy into the preseason hype, as the Pokes have one of the longest tenured coaches in all of football in Mike Gundy and he returns perhaps one of the best rushers in the country in Ollie Gordon. However, the Pokes under Gundy have always found ways to lay colossal eggs despite their upside and we cite this because this reflects the coaching intangibles in play. After all, we can cite numerous Gundy debacles in previous iterations of Oklahoma State teams that were supposed to emerge as a potential playoff team and failed miserably.

Though an FCS team, South Dakota State is the defending national champion and the #1 ranked team unanimously in the FCS polls. Very simply, this is a team with a pedigree and a winning culture and though the Jackrabbits are the visitor and from the lower subdivision of college ball, we can assure you that the Jackrabbits will not be intimidated one bit when they step into Stillwater. We have to like that sort of scenario out of the gate taking back points with a team that will fancy its chances of winning this game outright who we also know will be coming to play a full four quarters.

If Thursday’s result between Colorado (A Big 12 team who was also hyped up to no end) and North Dakota State (SDSU’s arch-rival and the #2 team in the FCS polls) in Boulder illustrates how live these Missouri Valley Conference antagonists can be, we would be apt to highlight that the same situation is more or less taking place here in Stillwater at virtually the same price (NDSU was a +9½ underdog). The only difference is that South Dakota State is an even better team who trampled Montana 23-3 the last time it was on the field winning a national title. South Dakota State won’t just be looking to play meaningful minutes in Stillwater, they’ve come to lay siege to the Cowboys and strictly on the bounds of FBS vs FCS bias, we get them an enhanced price. This could easily be the FBS-FCS upset of Saturday.
