Nebraska -13 over Northern Illinois
Memorial Stadium, Lincoln, NE
Streaming: FS1
7:00 PM EST. Northern Illinois is a MAC team that upset Boston College in Week 1 as an eight point pooch and then the tables were turned on them last week when they were an 8½-point choice and lost to Southern Illinois, an FCS team, 14-11. Northern Illinois is now 1-1 on the year both straight up and against the spread but it is taking a massive step up in class here, on the road no less in one of the most hostile environments in all of college football. A lackadaisical performance by the Huskies offense in a sloppy loss is telling and if you do decide to bet NIU here, we warn you that you should also be worried about its defense. Between its first game against a weak Boston College team and last week’s loss to an FCS team, we saw too many guys who couldn't get lined up correctly, corners who are nowhere near ready for this type of game and an alarming lack of fundamentals in every position group. This game sets up nicely for a physical Nebraska squad that might be the hungriest team in the country after opening up 0-2 to start the year.
Nebraska lost its opener in Minnesota, 13-10. Nebraska controlled the game and absolutely dominated the Gophers but the ‘Huskers lost the turnover battle 5-1 and lost on a last second FG. Nebraska should have won that game by three TD’s. Last week Nebraska lost to upstart Colorado in another misleading score. Nebraska racked up 222 yards on the ground against the Buffalos. In the first half Nebraska missed a FG, fumbled once and threw one interception and found themselves down just 13-0. The ‘Huskers would make it 13-7 in the third quarter before the wheels fell off. All told, Nebraska once again turned the ball over a bunch of times (4 to be exact) and have now turned it over 9 times in two games. Matt Rhule will not stand for this type of sloppiness from his players. He’ll have them holding a football for 9 hours a day. After an 0-2 start in which they lost the turnover battle 9-2, Nebraska could easily be 2-0 with wins over Minnesota and Colorado and then they would be a 20-point favorite here. Instead, they are desperate, vastly superior, at home for the first time this season and very undervalued.
