St. Peter's -2½ over Delaware

7:00 PM ET. Two weeks ago, we faded the Blue Hens when they were a public dog (as they are here) against the winless Duquesne Dukes. Our position was based on Delaware’s record, which was built on feasting against inferior competition. This hypothesis was validated when the Dukes defeated them by 14. Now, we have another opportunity to fade Delaware.

Since losing to Duquesne, the Blue Hens have padded their record with two more wins against Division II lightweights to improve to 7-4. These blowouts make their results appear more impressive than they are, especially when compared to St. Peter’s 4-5 mark, which is misleading in its own way. Delaware’s strength of schedule ranks 329th in the country, highlighting the emptiness of their wins. In contrast, the Peacocks have faced the 73rd toughest schedule nationally and have performed respectably despite their record.

Three of St. Peter’s five losses came by seven points or fewer, including a four-point loss at Seton Hall as 13.5-point underdogs and a 10-point loss at Rutgers as 16-point underdogs. In both games, the Peacocks demonstrated grit and competitiveness. Their recent nine-point loss at Iona was also closer than the score suggests. Meanwhile, Delaware’s padded wins over weak opponents have made them a public darling once again. The line correctly reflects that the Peacocks are the better side, and we’ll gladly back them.
