Oral Roberts +6½ over Duke

Thursday - 7:10 PM EST. Oral Roberts comes into this game after winning the Summit League. The Golden Eagles went an impressive 30-4 after playing one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the nation. That slate of games ranked 13th out of the 363 graded schools in Division I. What's ironic about that is head coach Paul Mills has trouble finding popular Power Six schools to play his Golden Eagles. Enter the Blue Devils of Duke.

There may not be a team in this tournament with more pedigree than Duke. Although under new leadership with head coach Jon Scheyer taking over from legend Mike Krzyzewski, Duke is still Duke. The Blue Devils are also coming off a high-profile showing in the ACC tournament where they made a run to the final, knocking off Pitt (96-69) and Clemson (76-56) along the way. When you win two Power Six tournament games by 27 and 20 points, you are going to get noticed. When you are Duke and you win two ACC tournament games by those wide margins, you are on top of the mountain.

The Dukies played their way up to a #5 seed in this tournament on the back of that run to the ACC finals, but be warned, you are going to pay a premium to back their blue blood brand here in Round 1. Moreover, this Duke team is not of the quality championship contenders of years past. First and foremost, the ACC had a down year. So down that Duke rival North Carolina didn't make the Big Dance. In fact, only four teams from the usually mighty ACC got the call here. That includes Pitt, who the Blue Devils destroyed in the ACC tourney. If Pitt is repping your conference, your conference is not worthy of its high standing in the market. Consider the ACC on notice. We also see other blue bloods big favorites but this one is enticingly not. The upset possibility is strong here.
