Washington St +125 over Oregon

5:30 PM EST. This game will take place in Las Vegas, thus it is on a neutral court. What we know for sure is that Oregon is on the bubble and a loss here will likely get them an invitation to the NIT tournament, you know, the one nobody gives a rat’s ass about. In other words, Oregon is on the bubble and will probably need to win at least two games in the PAC-12 conference tournament to even be considered for an at-large bid. Meanwhile, Washington State is going to have to win the PAC-12 tourney to punch its ticket to the dance.

That’s the setup. The meat on the bone is that Oregon has pedigree in spades and market perception is that they’re the superior squad here. The Ducks also posted a better record, both overall and in the conference than Wazzu did. The next question is why oh why oh why did oddsmakers open this one up with the Ducks being a very enticing -2½-point favorite in a “must win” game? We’ll tell you why. It’s because oddsmakers know how good WSU is.

Washington State’s 17-15 record is misleading. They had a bunch of close defeats this season, including tight losses at home to both UCLA and Arizona, the two best teams in the conference. They had final possession losses to Utah and Colorado. The Cougars have attempted more 3s than anyone in the Pac-12 and are second in efficiency from deep. Washington State won at Arizona in January. It’s beaten Oregon already and also beat Arizona State and USC, too.

We absolutely acknowledge that the Ducks are a very good team and probably deserve to go to the Dance. They played a very tough schedule that has them battle tested and beyond. The Ducks have a signature win over Arizona. They played and lost to Houston by just 10 and have several other close losses too. However, Oregon has also been blown out on several occasions which is a big warning flag to would-be backers. It tells us that the Ducks do not have several ways of winning a ball game and that they must rely on hot shooting to beat quality teams. The Huskies are certainly a quality team and in this unfamiliar venue, oddsmakers do not like Oregon’s chances. That’s good enough for us.
