Pacific +9 over San Francisco

Streaming: ESPN+

11:30 PM EST. The Dons make their WCC Tournament debut as the dual #6 seed, but to say that is not where San Francisco saw themselves at the beginning of the season would be an understatement. The Dons were pegged to contend in the WCC and were chosen, alongside BYU, to finish as high as third in the conference behind powerhouses Gonzaga and St. Mary’s. The Zags and Gaels did their parts and are the top two seeds, but the Dons did not fulfill their lofty expectations.

While the Dons are slotted sixth, recency bias looms large here, as they not only won but they also covered in their two games against Pacific this season. Back in mid-January, in San Fran, the Dons waffled the Tigers, 78-57, as an 11-point favorite. In the rematch, in Stockton, the Dons won again, 76-68, this time as 5½-point chalk. Those results get the focus because that is the matchup here, but now that we’ve moved to a neutral site and all of the pressure is on San Francisco to make up for a poor regular season with a run to the WCC title. However, the Dons have not looked good for weeks, and one cannot just turn on the quality play like a light switch. If they could, the Dons would have done so already.

Pacific played yesterday, and there is a perception in the market that somehow puts them at a disadvantage here because the Tigers will be tired. We could not disagree more. The Tigers went gate-to-wire against Pepperdine last night, taking a 13-point lead into the half, which was enough to close out an 84-71 win. These guys aren’t tired. The Tigers are in the primes of their lives, IN LAS VEGAS, and they can’t wait to get back on the court. A tournament mindset is so much different than the regular season. Anyone can catch lightning in a bottle. We can’t predict if the Tigers will be hot, or if the Dons will be hot. What we do know is that Pacific is loose and feeling good. The Tigers are playing with house money, which makes these inflated points so appealing. Good thing they’re in Vegas.
