Rider -8½ -106 over Manhattan

2:00 PM EST. The Jaspers of Manhattan have covered in three straight games. They’re also coming off an OT loss to Iona, the class of the MAAC. The Jaspers were also projected to finish higher than Rider in the preseason projections so when we saw the price on Rider spotting this many points, we had to look twice and wonder why. Surely, we’re not the only ones that had to do a double take on Rider spotting this many points to a Manhattan squad with no reported injuries. Thus, when we see something that doesn’t look right, it always grabs our attention and this one is no exception.

Oddsmakers do not like this spot for Manhattan. Why else would they be offering up so many points in what looks like an evenly matched game. The Jaspers are 4-4 in conference while Rider is 5-3 so just one game separates them. However, a closer look shows that the Jaspers played the 318th ranked non-conference Strength of Schedule (SOS) in the county while Rider’s SOS ranked 119 positions better at 199. Furthermore, Rider beat Iona, in Iona no less. The Broncs also lost to Providence by just one point and lost to Georgia by just six points. Rider is also one of the most experienced teams in the nation. Those factors, in conjunction with reliable guard play, are essential elements to success in college basketball. Let’s not ignore that last year at about this same time with almost the same team, the Broncs caught fire and went 8-6 down the stretch, including an upset victory over Iona in the MAAC Tournament. All six of those losses came by two possessions or less, and two of them came in overtime. The Broncs are better suited this year to steamroll some teams and after the Jaspers heartbreaking OT loss to Iona last game out, oddsmakers have taken a pretty strong position here on the favorite, which opened at -8½ and has already been bet down.
