Villanova +150 over St. John’s

7:00 PM EST. The Red Storm are 12-5, and they come into tonight on a two game winning streak, including a takedown of then #6 UConn, on the road, 85-74, as a 14½ point underdog. If that wasn’t enough of a sweet situational spot, the Johnnies are also hosting their first home game of the season at Madison Square Garden, “The World’s Most Famous Arena”. This is the most hyped Johnnies game of the year, and it’s going down right in the heart of The Big Apple.

The Johnnies were not expected to do much in the Big East, as they were pegged to be closer to the bottom than they were to the top (8-of-11 schools). Preseason rankings are not everything, but they aren’t nothing and they can be used to help mine for value.

It’s been a rough transition for the Wildcats since the departure of Jay Wright, who retired after more than two decades in the Philadelphia suburbs coaching at Villanova. That made way for former Wright assistant, Kyle Neptune, to come over from Fordham after one year as the head coach of the Rams. Expectations were obviously still high, but so far those expectations have not been met. ‘Nova’s usually shiny and reliable image is scuffed for the first time in a long time.

When was the last time Villanova was an underdog to St. John’s? We went back three years because that’s long enough to make our point, as the Wildcats have been favored, home or away, in 10 straight games going back to January 8, 2019. That feels like five lifetimes ago, so let’s just pump the breaks and stop there. There are layers of value to be had here. Wrong side favored.
