Eastern Michigan -2½ -101 over Bowling Green

7:00 PM EST. Now that the non-conference schedule is behind 99% of all teams, they can focus on the “real season”, which starts tonight for both EMU and Bowling Green. A quick look at the non-conference standings sees Bowling Green at 6-7 overall and then way down at the very bottom of the MAC is Eastern Michigan. We’ll once again reiterate that the media/market puts far too much emphasis on wins and losses as opposed to the product on the floor, which provides us with opportunities like this. EMU is 3-10 because their non-conference Strength of Schedule (SOS) ranked 167th compared to the Bee Gees SOS, which ranked 140 positions worse at 307. While the Eagles of Eastern Michigan were playing teams like Bradley (#70), Michigan (#48), Purdue Fort Wayne (#139) and FAU (#35) among others, the Falcons were playing one marshmallow after another. To close out their non-conference slate, the Bee Gees last eight games were against Southern Indiana, Queens, Morgan State, Hampton, Norfolk State, UT Martin, Fairmont and Ohio Dominican. The highest ranked team among that group comes in ranked 196th in the country while the rest are ranked 250th or worse.

In a series of highly unusual circumstances, Eastern Michigan found itself at the forefront of the college basketball news wire this summer. Memphis transfer Emoni Bates announced his intention to transfer back home to Ypsilanti, where he once blossomed into one of college basketball’s most sought-after recruits. The news instantly sent shockwaves through college basketball’s collective consciousness and put the Mid-American Conference squarely into the national spotlight. Five-star talents don’t usually wade into these waters — and suffice it to say, Bates is as talented as he is polarizing. Bates made headlines again in late September stemming from an unfortunate run in with the law. In late September, Bates was suspended from all basketball activities but he rejoined the team four games ago and went off for 36 points last game versus South Carolina and will face one of the worst defenses in the country here. EMU is the MAC’s most under the radar team and underpriced team, so keep an eye on them before they soar up the MAC standings. Today, they really are a bargain.
