Austin Peay @ Purdue
Austin Peay +24½ -106 over Purdue

Never ever forget what they gave us. We are living their dream. Observe this Remembrance Day with all respect in heart. Our historical freedom story is written with brave soldiers’ blood. I, for one, am forever grateful to all veterans. Today, I’m remembering everyone affected by war, across races, genders, ideologies and borders. I’m remembering the tragedy of war, all wars. I wear it in the hope that wars will be a thing of the past.

7:00 PM EST. We faded the Boilermakers on Tuesday when they beat Milwaukee -Wisc, 84-53. Meanwhile, Austin Peay also played a game and they lost, 99-50 to N.C. State. Ouch. Thus, what we have here is one team coming off a blowout win playing a team that lost by a hair under 50 points. You think these points aren’t inflated to a large degree? Of course they are. We’ll rarely put much emphasis on one game, especially when that game is the first of the year. What we discussed on Tuesday regarding Purdue still holds true in that it is priced high because of last year’s great season that included a trip to the Sweet-16.

Purdue was already expected to take something of a step back this season following the departures of Jaden Ivey and Trevion Williams to the NBA, but losing two of its key guards in Eric Hunter, a three-year starter, and Isaiah Thompson exacerbates those concerns. Milwaukee was ice-cold on Tuesday, hitting a mere 3 triples on 20 attempts. 23 of 60 FG attempts and getting to the line a lousy 9 times and hitting just four.

Austin Peay moved conferences this offseason, leaving the Ohio Valley, where they spent the entirety of their Division I history dating back to 1963-64. Now, they join the ASUN. For HC Nate James, who took over the reins after spending over a decade on the Duke bench, it will be his second conference in his second season as head coach. The Governors went 8-10 last season in OVC play, a relative down year after compiling a 49-25 record in the four years prior, powered by current NBA player Terry Taylor. Peay relied heavily on underclassmen to lead the way in 2021-22, and the hope is the team can hit the ground running with more experience and more talent and compete immediately in the ASUN.

Austin Peay brings back five players who started at least 10 games last year, with two impact transfers and some promising freshmen joining the team. As a result, the Govs have a real shot at a winning record and a top-half finish in league play. Austin Peay’s future is bright with James at the helm. He has undoubtedly raised the overall talent level of the program, and his team already checked off one ‘first’ last season by knocking off Dayton at UD Arena. The caliber of player coming to Clarksville is improving, and the ASUN is officially on notice. The new kids on the block are here to compete, particularly with this tantalizing set of newcomers to pair with Stone-Carrawell and Hutchins-Everett.

Despite being just one game in, this line has been heavily influenced by recency bias, notably Austin Peay getting blown out and Purdue blowing out its opponent. In the spirit of sticking with it, we’re back for more against the Boilermakers because they had a weak off-season but it’s not reflected in this price.
