10:10 PM EST. We find the Cavaliers in a bit of a rut after a run of just 4-6 in their last 10 games. At the pay window, where it matters most, Cleveland is just a tab better at 5-5 Against the Spread (ATS). Those recent results are pedestrian, and they’ve brought out the critics, with local headlines that include, “Do Cleveland Cavaliers have a 3-point problem? What’s going on with the bench?” and “A baffling bench, Cavaliers’ 3-point shooting defense lit up under the lights of Madison Square Garden: Behind the numbers.” If we didn’t know better we’d say the latter was a torrid exposé of a major scandal, not the analysis of a single basketball game. In the bubble, the Cavs may be “underperforming,” but across those last 10 games, they’ve played Denver, Phoenix, Utah, Portland, Minnesota, New Orleans, Memphis, Golden State, Milwaukee, and New York. There are no dregs in that bunch, and four (Nuggets, Grizzlies, Warriors, and Bucks) are top-10. Tonight, the Cavs take a big step down in competition.

We’re not here to pick on the Rockets. We all know they are at the bottom of the league with just 11 wins, but situationally speaking, this is a really tough spot for the Rockets to compete with a top-five team from the East, as this is Houston’s second game of a back-to-back and its third game in four nights. In their game against Washington last night, the Rockets led by as many as 19 points, took a 58-43 lead into the half, and were still up 10 headed to the fourth quarter, but could not hang on, dropping a 108-103 decision. When a team wins as infrequently as the Rockets do, losing a game from ahead like that has to be demoralizing. That Houston faded so gloriously just 24 hours ago is not conducive to its ability to cover this deflated number. The Rockets are running on fumes, and they will get buried by an invader ready to waffle a much weaker host. Swallow the points.
