Philadelphia +105 over L.A. Clippers

The 76ers actually opened as the favorite here, but once the status of the Clippers' Paul George was upgraded to “questionable,” the line moved in anticipation of his return from a five-game absence, and now the Clip Joint is the chalk. When we see a move like this with a star expected to return, we call it “star chasing.” It’s like the reverse of our “injury chaser” strategy. That is to say when a star player returns there is an overreaction to it, just like there is an overreaction when a star player misses a game.

The reason we find value in this situation is that when a big name like George returns to the lineup, the team has to adjust to his being back. George is going to get his, and it’s his teammates' job to feed him the rock. With him out of the lineup, the Clippers have been playing a totally different game, with relatively positive results, going 2-1 over their last three games. It took time for the team to adjust without George, and it’s going to take time for them to adjust again now that it looks like he’s set to go tonight after a full practice yesterday.

As for the Sixers, they’ve won two straight, but they were not convincing wins, as they came by just one point each. When you combine those failures to cover with their 133-114 home loss to the Thunder last Thursday night, Philly has failed to hit pay dirt in three straight games. When you don’t pay, the market doesn't play. However, we must note that the 76ers were a 7-point favorite at Utah and a 5½-point choice over LeBron and the Lakers on Saturday night in those two squeakers. Even if the Clippers have their full complement of players, the Sixers should be favored here.
