However, while it looks bad on the surface, a closer look shows that her last outing was an unlucky one. First, Botelho’s opponent (Luana Carolina) missed weight, forcing that bout into catchweight territory at 128.5 lbs. For Botelho, it was the second time in four bouts that her opponent did not cut weight properly. That situation is often not beneficial for the fighter that did what they were supposed to do, as was the case with Botelho. She suffered a split decision loss to Carolina in May, but likely deserved a better fate, as Botelho landed more strikes and had the fights only takedown. Botelho is a dangerous fighter at 125 lbs, as she carries some thunder in those fists. That makes Botelho an appealing play as a pooch against a UFC newcomer.

Karine Silva makes her UFC debut tonight and one has to wonder how the bright lights of the world’s number one MMA promotion will affect her. Silva has some hype surrounding her after racking up five straight wins on her way to the UFC. That includes a submission over Yan Qihui on the Contender Series. As impressive as that win was, it is worth noting that Silva was down on the scorecards in that fight and needed the finish to ensure a victory. Now Silva is making her UFC debut proper against one of the best strikers in the women’s 125 lbs division. Known for her aggressiveness, that could work against Silva here. It may cause her to gas later in the fight, or it could cause her to put herself into vulnerable positions. If you give a veteran like Poliana Botelho an opening, she is going to take it.
