This is a classic “buy low, sell high” situation, and we’re looking to capitalize by fading Luis Ortiz (RHP - PIT), who’s riding a deceptive 15-inning scoreless streak over his last two and a half starts since August 19. While Ortiz managed six scoreless innings against Cleveland in his last outing, he also walked three and struggled through leg pain before being pulled. His 3.19 ERA looks nice on the surface, but his xERA of 4.71 tells a different story. With only 88 strikeouts in 113 innings and a subpar groundball rate of 39.1%, plus a weak swing-and-miss rate of 8.7%, Ortiz is primed for regression.

On the other side, we’re looking to “buy low” on DJ Herz (LHP - WAS). Herz took a loss in his last start against the Cubs, allowing four runs on just three hits and two walks, while striking out five over 4.2 innings. However, it’s important to note he pitched four scoreless innings before running into trouble in the fifth. It was his first outing since the All-Star break in which he allowed more than 2 ER, indicating he's still in decent form. This is the kind of opportunity we’re looking for.
