N.Y. Mets -1½ over Chicago
2:10 PM EST. There was talk about shutting down Garrett Crochet (LHP - CWS), as he hasn’t pitched more than five innings since his start on June 30. The most he’s pitched in any start since then is four innings, and he’s gone less than that in three of his last eight starts. In his most recent start, he threw just four pitches before the game was suspended due to bad weather. That was on August 31, and the White Sox made him sit for another full trip through the rotation. Despite barely being used, it’s not expected that Crochet will pitch deep into this game.
Sean Manaea (LHP - NYM) has been great for the Mets this season, and he comes into today after allowing three earned runs or less in 13 of his last 14 starts. Over Manaea’s previous six starts, he’s been even better, striking out nine or more in four starts and racking up a 27.9% strikeout-to-walk rate. Manaea will look to keep it rolling here versus a White Sox team striking out 24.6% of the time versus LHP over the past month with a 43 Weighted Runs Created Plus (wRC+), which is off-the-charts low and not a typo.
What is Weighted Runs Created Plus?
Before diving into wRC+ (Weighted Runs Created Plus), we have to first understand Runs Created. That base metric—Runs Created—aims to estimate a player's total offensive contribution to a lineup and includes factors like a hitter's ability to get on base and hit for extra bases.
Weighted Runs Created Plus takes the Runs Created statistic and adds some key factors into the equation, such as the era (trends around the league) or ballpark effects. It's then adjusted so that a wRC+ of 100 represents a league-average hitter. A wRC+ of 120 would be 20 percent above the league average, and an 80 would be 20 percent below the league average.
