4:05 PM EST. DJ Herz (LHP - WAS) is coming off an excellent start in which he struck out eight Braves over five scoreless innings, giving up just one hit. That turn marked the third time Herz did not allow an earned run, and it was the fourth time he notched at least 8 Ks in his 14 starts this season. Herz now has 83 punchouts in 65.2 innings, with a nice xERA of 3.35, and his 2-6 record does not do him justice.

Meanwhile, Javier Assad (RHP - CHC) gave up three runs on six hits and a walk over seven IP versus the Marlins, striking out three. That was the first time Assad has pitched seven innings all season, and it was his first quality start in five turns this month. Assad’s surface numbers look serviceable, but his ERA of 3.15 is smoke and mirrors, backed by a 4.62 xERA. He also has a high strand rate of 84.1% while posting a wimpy swing-and-miss rate of 6.3% and 102 Ks to 51 BBs in 120 innings. Dude is the second-best SP in this matchup, and it’s not close.
