Julian Aguiar (RHP - CIN) has just 10 innings of big-league work under his belt, so it might be a lot to ask of him to be favored in this range against an A’s side that has won three in a row, including the first two games of this series. Furthermore, the Reds are reeling, having lost seven of their last 10, five of their last six, and three in a row.

J.T. Ginn (RHP - OAK) had promising stuff coming out of Mississippi State back in 2020 and went in the 2nd round for $2.9 million to the Mets despite going down with Tommy John before the draft. Those arm issues have continued to pop up throughout his professional career. He was traded for Chris Bassitt before the 2022 season began, and in the interim, Ginn’s sinker has continued to tick down in both velocity and command until this season. Now, it sits around 93 with 13” of arm-side run, and he puts it in the zone nearly half the time. While it doesn’t elicit many swings-and-misses (15% whiff), it does garner a fair amount of weak contact, which helps explain its 51% usage rate and gives one a fair idea of what kind of pitcher this is: a pitch-to-contact backender.

Ginn’s slider accounts for half the remaining usage (25%) at 84 mph with solid chase (37%) and whiff (38.1%) rates, but it’s his cutter that looks to be his best offering. That pitch sits only at 87 mph but generates his best component stats across chase (37%), whiff (41%), and contact (.244), suggesting its 8.6% usage rate should rise. There’s also a four-seamer and change-up in here, both of which get hit hard. At 6’2” and 200 pounds, Ginn gets down the mound well (6.6’ extension) for a player of his size due to his drop-and-drive delivery, and generates a fair amount of ground ball (54%) action. Still, his ERA at Triple-A is running in the high 5s with an xERA only a run lower, so in order to reach his fourth-starter projection, he’ll need a solid defense behind him. Considering the injuries and the limited stuff, however, Ginn is likely more of an up-and-down arm who possibly ends up in long relief, but that’s speculation. Dude has been a starter his entire professional career, and you can never underestimate Oakland’s sharp eyes (GM David Forst working under the guidance of Billy Beane) for talent.
