Cooper Criswell (RHP - BOS) lacks strikeout upside but has done a good job inducing weak contact this season (50% groundball rate) while accruing a 3.85 xERA and 1.36 WHIP across 75 innings with Boston. Criswell has been a bad luck case this season as well, as he has a bloated Batting Average of Balls in Play (BABIP) of .319 and a low strand rate of 64.4%.

Justin Verlander (RHP - HOU) will make his first start in nearly 2½ months after sitting on the IL with neck discomfort. Prior to that injury, Verlander was a shell of his former self, and despite some modest success in his two rehab starts, he threw just 57 pitches in his second start, so even if he is fully healthy, he’s not fully stretched out for this one. Before heading to the IL, Verlander had an xERA of 4.98 while posting a swing-and-miss rate of 9.6% and a weak first-pitch strike rate of 59%. We were fading Verlander before he was hurt, and we aren’t going to stop now that he’s back.
