9:40 PM EST. Michael King (RHP - SD) is a pitcher that has been on our radar all season, and we like his stuff, but he is overvalued today. This brings us to a situation where we acknowledge that we are wagering against a good pitcher on a playoff-caliber team, but value is value, and that brings us to King’s opposition today in Minnesota starter Zebby Matthews (RHP - MIN).

Matthews posted a gorgeous 114/7 K/BB ratio in 97 innings across three stops in the minors prior to his big league debut, and he did not disappoint in that turn last Tuesday, where he gave up 2 ER over 5 IP with no walks and 5 Ks. That’s even more impressive when considering the plate discipline the Royals bring versus RHP (just 27th in total Ks). Matthews was on the ball, as he needed just 77 pitches to complete five innings in that first MLB start.

On his way up the ladder, Matthews has maintained his high velocity and generated more strikes with his secondary stuff (versus the Royals, his cutter was at 91.1 MPH, and his slider came in at an 86 MPH average). Perhaps most impressive is the combination of Matthews’ 30.5% strikeout rate that pairs spectacularly with his 1.9% walk rate. Matthews has a large arsenal, and thanks to that plus cutter and slider, he’s been effective against both LH (.536 OPS). To summarize, there are few, if any, with Matthews’ combination of power, control, and consistency, and we won’t get prices like this on him much longer.
