Dean Kremer (RHP - BAL) is set for his 17th start of the season for an Orioles rotation that desperately needs quality pitching to complement a potent young lineup vying for its first AL East title in a decade. However, Kremer isn’t cutting it. He’s coming off another loss (4-9), allowing five runs on four hits with five walks over 4.1 IP against the Blue Jays last Thursday. Kremer has now lost four straight decisions (20.2 IP), posting a 5.66 ERA (5.25 xERA) with 11 walks. Over his last nine starts (44 IP), he’s issued 25 walks.

We are coming right back on the Nationals today after they lit up the scoreboard with nine runs in the opener of this Beltway Series against Baltimore. Washington will go with DJ Herz (LHP - WAS), who didn’t factor into the decision last Thursday after allowing two runs on four hits over 2.2 IP against the Giants, striking out four. A stat line like that shows the fine line between having control and struggling with it, but even with that short outing, Herz has given up two runs or less in four straight starts. Prior to his last turn, he’d gone at least five innings in three straight starts. Herz is a firecracker, and he’s already punched out 63 hitters in 49 innings, posting an xERA of 3.45. Sure, he’s a little wild, but those strikeout numbers can’t be ignored, and he’s worth backing at this inflated price against a stiff like Kremer.
