Paul Skenes (RHP - PIT) didn't factor into the decision last Sunday against the red-hot Diamondbacks, where he admittedly did not have his best performance, but it was by no means a poor effort. However, the standard set by Skenes in his phenomenal rookie year makes an OK night look like a rough one. Prior to the two runs on five hits over 5.1 IP he gave up to the Snakes, Skenes had logged eight quality starts, and he still owns a 1.99 ERA (2.59 xERA) with 107 strikeouts to just 14 walks in 86.0 innings.

The Dodgers will send out River Ryan (RHP - LAD) for his fourth start of the season as they continue to look for quality starting pitching here in the dog days of summer. Ryan allowed two runs on four hits over 4.2 IP v the A’s last Sunday, but he was pulled after just 75 pitches and needed Evan Phillips to bail him out of that fourth-inning jam, which limited the damage done to his stat line. On the surface, those stats sparkle with his 1.72 ERA leading the way, but his 4.75 xERA shows that a regression to the bad could be coming with such a small sample size. Furthermore, his walk rate is already an issue with 9 BB in 15.2 IP, and he’s been lucky with a high 86% strand rate. Ryan is a weak favorite, and he’s the second-best pitcher in this matchup by a wide margin.
