Miami over Tampa Bay

6:50 PM EST. The Marlins failed to complete the series sweep versus the Brewers yesterday, dropping a 6-2 decision, but before that, they had won four out of five, including taking two of three from Baltimore. Today, Miami catches a Rays team that is offloading pieces left and right, and the Fish will send out Edward Cabrera (RHP - MIA), who is striking out opposing hitters at a high clip (11.50 K/9) with 49 punchouts in 38.1 IP across nine starts. On the surface, his 7.04 ERA is ugly, but there are signs that he has been unlucky and that a correction to the good could be coming in that misleading stat, as his batting average of balls in play (BABIP) is high (.315), his strand rate is low (62.3%), and his xERA sits at 3.92.

The Rays have been having a fire sale in advance of today’s trade deadline, having moved starter Zach Eflin, as well as 2021 AL Rookie of the Year outfielder Randy Arozarena, RP Jason Adam, and All-Star 3B Isaac Paredes in four separate deals, and there is a good chance they aren’t done. Rays president of baseball ops Erik Neander said it best about his team, who have thrown in the towel on 2024: "We are a worse team today than we were 24 hours ago by way of them not being here. That's not something we can shy away from."

That said, the Rays will now turn to Jeffrey Springs (RHP - TB), who takes Eflin’s spot in the rotation and will make his first big league start since April of 2023. Springs has been working his way back from Tommy John surgery, and he’s started 12 games in the minors, going 0-3 with an ERA of 4.50, with opposing hitters racking up a .292 average against him. It’s not certain how long Springs will even pitch today, as he’s only gone 32 IP in those dozen turns. Prior to his getting injured, Springs was having a stellar 2023, but it does not yet appear he has returned to form, and the price to pay to find out in his first start back is far too steep.
