The Angels are a team on edge today as the trade deadline looms (6:00 PM EST), but they plan to have Griffin Canning (RHP - LAA), who is feelin’ 22 with this being his 22nd turn of the season tonight. Canning has not been at his best this season, as he’s seen a significant drop in his strikeout rate (9.85 K/9 to 6.42 K/9) while also seeing an increase of over 1 BB/9 in his walk rate (3.33 BB/9) over last season. It’s not hard to see why his K’s are down, as his first pitch strike rate is down nearly 4% (56.9%), his swing-and-miss rate is down almost 3% (10%), and his called-and-swinging-strike rate (CSW%) is down over 5% (24.2%).

The Rockies will go with Cal Quantrill (RHP - COL), who is also making his 22nd start of the season after he picked up the win last time out vs. the Red Sox on Wednesday. In that trip to the bump, Quantrill allowed 2 ER, which was the 15th time in his 22 turns that he allowed three runs or less, which includes seven in which he allowed one or less. Look, we’re not saying Quantrill is a front-end starter, but he’s been steady, and it’s worth noting that nearly half (10) of his starts have come at Coors Field. While not sexy, what you see is what you get with Quantrill as his ERA is 4.09, his xERA is 4.40, and he has a solid groundball rate of 46.4%. In a game between two teams that are struggling for wins, we’re delighted to take back a price with the visiting Rocks.
