Talk about a tough sport for Griffin Canning (RHP - LAA), who was already having a tough year and is coming off a rough night in which he allowed six runs over 3.1 IP in the Angels' second-half opener last Friday before exiting with some elbow irritation. That was the third time in three starts that Canning failed to reach five innings, and he’s given up 12 runs over 12 IP in that time. On the season, Canning has seen his skills erode, with his strikeout rate dropping, his walk rate climbing, and his swing and miss rate falling to a career-low (10%).

Luis Castillo (RHP - SEA) has eight wins and ten losses, and we challenge you to look for another starting pitcher or two with 18 decisions at this point of the season. Castillo has pitched well despite his middling record on a division-leading team, but those ten losses are often a result of a lack of run support rather than a lack of quality. In his last loss Friday, Castillo received no run support in a 3-0 defeat, which was the second time in seven losses that the M’s were shut out with him on the bump. Over those last seven defeats, Seattle posted runs of 1, 0, 4, 3, 3, 3, and 0 for him. Despite that lack of runs, Castillo posted three straight quality starts in July and now sports a 3.55 ERA (3.71 xERA), 1.16 WHIP, and 119/35 K/BB ratio through 124.1 IP.
