Minnesota over Arizona
3:40 PM EST. The results for Jordan Montgomery (LHP - ARI) are getting better, as he’s now won three games in a row, but only one of those wins was a quality start. Since May 19, Montgomery has not thrown more than 90 pitches in any start, which covers six turns. In 63 IP this season across 12 starts, the lefty has a bloated ERA of 5.71, which is backed by an xERA of 5.03 with 44 Ks to 22 BBs. Tonight, he draws a Twins side that ranks first in the majors in average vs. LHP, fifth in OBP, and third in slugging%.
David Festa (RHP - MIN) has the best nickname of any starting pitcher on the board today, as "The Slim Reaper" (he’s 6’6”, 185) enters the show for his first start on the back of a solid profile with tremendous building blocks. The 24-year-old has a whippy, somewhat higher slot delivery that gets on hitters quickly with his near 7’ of extension down the mound.
Festa has added velocity across his repertoire and has maintained it for multiple seasons. He sports an excellent 95-mph fastball that touches 98, but he has been trending more and more towards working backward and favoring his 87-mph slider and 88-mph change-up over the four-seamer, as the slider is now his most used pitch. It’s for good reason, as that slider is working with a near 20% SwK and 68% zone contact rate.
All of Festa’s primaries are at least above-average pitches, and his ability to mix and match and command them is solid. Festa’s 95th percentile zone contact rate of 70.8% and 16.8% SwK says that he’s got the stuff to be a solid mid-rotation starter. While there are still going to be growing pains, he looks like he could make an immediate impact, and today he presents us with some tremendous value. Put this dude on your radar.
