Washington over Detroit

6:40 PM EST. We are not sure why the Tigers are running Kenta Maeda (RHP - DET) out to the mound tonight, as he’s not only been awful thus far, but he is hurting too. That said, Maeda is being paid a cool $12 million this season, and he only lasted two pitches versus the Rangers last time out after suffering from abdominal discomfort, so perhaps the Tigers just want to make sure they get as much out of the 36-year-old before his body completely crumbles into dust.

Maeda has already spent time on the IL this season with a viral issue, and his numbers are enough to make the Tigers brass that signed him sick to their stomachs, too, as he has a bloated ERA of 6.28 with an xERA of 5.85 to back that surface number. Maeda has also seen a significant dip in his Ks over last year (6.69 K/9 from 10.09 K/9) while also watching his swing-and-miss rate drop over 3% from 12.8% to just 9.2%, his career low. There are few SPs that have logged 10 or more starts that have been as bad as Maeda, and there is nothing in his profile to suggest better days are coming. If he is hurt, he’s a major liability any time he takes the mound, especially as the betting chalk.

Mitchell Parker (LHP - WAS) has been a nice surprise this season for the Nationals, who, while generally regarded as dregs coming into the season, are a pretty solid team that is often undervalued, as they are tonight. As for Parker, he is 10 starts into his career in the show, and thus far, he has not looked out of place, posting an ERA of 3.47. An equally solid 3.55 xERA backs that surface number. While Parker brings many fine qualities to his 11th start of the season, his consistency has been paramount, as he’s allowed three or fewer runs in each of his prior starts, and his 45:12 K:BB ratio is solid. All things considered, should Parker and the Nationals really be an underdog in this spot to a sub-.500 team with arguably the weakest SP on the board on a loaded slate tonight?
