9:40 PM EST. Lots to like here with two quality starting pitchers and two teams that had high expectations before the season, fighting to get back to .500 before they try to make a run at a Wild Card spot.

Let's start with the hometown Padres, who will go with Joe Musgrove (RHP - SD) tonight in his eighth start of the season. Musgrove is 3-2 with an ERA of 4.71 and an xERA of 4.44. Across his 36.1 innings this season, Musgrove has 34 strikeouts with 12 walks, and he sports a WHIP of 1.38. We're not criticizing Musgrove, but he has been very "what you see is what you get" this season, and his underlying numbers back that up.

On the other side of this coin is Logan Gilbert (RHP - SEA), who is 3-3 while sporting an ERA of 4.08 and an xERA of 3.03. He has 73 strikeouts and 11 free passes in his 64 IP across 11 starts, and his WHIP is a tidy 0.98.

If this were a 50/50 proposition, one could argue that there is value in the starting pitcher who is having the better season, but this is not a 50/50 proposition. The Mariners are being offered up as an underdog, and those looking to back the Friars will have to pay -135 or thereabouts. As purveyors of value, all the value in this nightcap is on the Mariners.
