Toronto +118 over N.Y. Mets

7:10 PM EST. Chris Bassitt (RHP - TOR) goes for the Blue Jays today, but truth be told, he and the Jays have little to do with this play, as we are here to target their opposition today. That said, Bassitt has been a reliable starter for Toronto this season, posting a record of 5-4 and a respectable 3.80 ERA.

The Mets stock is on the uptick after winning 10 of their last 14 games and completing a three-game sweep of the Phillies. New York will send one of their big offseason signings to the mound, as Justin Verlander (RHP - DET) will take his sixth turn of the season for his new team. Verlander signed with the Mets for 2 years and $86.7 million with a vested option worth $35 million in 2025 that will be activated if Verlander hits the performance clauses in his contract. That means the Mets potentially have over $100 million invested in a hard-throwing righty who just turned 40.

Father Time has no losses, which Verlander and the Mets may be finding out sooner than they would have liked, considering the dollars and cents they have invested in the reigning American League Cy Young Award winner. After signing, it was announced that Verlander would miss the start of the season with a low-grade teres major strain, one of the four cuff muscles located at the upper back locale of his pitching shoulder.

Since returning from the IL, Verlander has gone 2-2 with an ERA of 4.80, and an xERA that's nearly as high at 4.65. Verlander has always been a flyball pitcher, but he's racked up a ton of strikeouts over the years. However, his Ks are down significantly this season with just 22 strikeouts across his 30 innings pitched. That dip in punchouts is backed up by the drop in Verlander's swinging and miss rate, which is down over 2% from last season and sits at a below-average 9.4%. Despite Verlander's struggles, he is getting paid big money and is going to be trotted out there every fifth day until his arm falls out of its socket.
