Pittsburgh +105 over San Francisco

3:45 PM EST. It’s not that Alex Wood (LHP) is a weak starter, it’s that he can barely make it past four innings these days and that means the Giants bullpen will be called upon early and that’s if everything goes well for Wood. Injuries are a given, as Alex Wood has missed time every year since 2016. Last year it was a shoulder impingement that shut him down in early September. The main difference between his strong starts and weak ones over the years is strand percentages because he allows baserunners (see his 1.44 WHIP this year). We can sometimes get his innings at a discount (if the shoulder checks out) but this is not one of those times. Wood has appeared in 7 games this year, six as a starter but he’s only thrown 26 innings total, which indicates he’s not durable at all. His ERA/xERA split of 3.51/4.69 strongly suggests that Wood is a roll of the dice. As the chalk against a superior starter, we’ll get behind the underdog.

Mitch Keller (RHP - PIT) is coming off his worst start of the season, where he allowed six runs over six innings versus the Mariners but still struck out eight. Keller still has a 3.01 ERA, 3.06 xERA, and 24.7% K-BB. He will take on a Giants team striking out 26.1% of the time versus RHP over the last two weeks. Keller is among the league leaders in xERA and it’s not like it’s early April. He’s been consistently good and this is an excellent spot for him and the Pirates.
