Colorado -1½ +240 over St. Louis

8:40 PM EST. Kyle Freeland (LHP - COL) has 23 K’s over his last 23 innings covering four starts. Throwing his slider (25.8%) more often has boosted his swing & miss rate and he also has a decent groundball rate of 48% with a 4.39 career xERA. That’s not bad considering where he pitches half his games.

Pitching for the Pirates is a lot different than pitching for the Cardinals but it is worth pointing out that Jose Quintana (LHP - ST. L) has three wins in 21 starts this year. That’s an average of one win every seven times out. Over the past four years, Quintana has recorded a disaster start in 28% of all his starts. You would be hard-pressed to find a starter with worse credentials than that, which may explain why he’s been on five different teams since 2020 (Cubs, Giants, Angels, Pirates, Cards). Quintana’s skills don't back better ratios going forward. With below-average swings and misses, his strikeouts figure to remain well below league average. His elevated WHIP and xERA since 2018 hints at more trouble and he’ll now face a Colorado team at Coors that absolutely destroys southpaws.
