L.A. Angels +137 over Seattle

4:10 PM EST. You think we like wagering on the Angels? We don’t. When we watch the Halos play, it makes us want to puke blood because that’s how frustrating a team they are to wager on but at least they’re showing signs of life the past few days with a 4-4 record over their last eight games including a DH split yesterday. Incidentally, Seattle scored three runs in yesterday’s two games so it was Seattle that was fortunate to get the split and not the Angels.

Tucker Davidson (LHP - LAA) started the season with Atlanta and fared really well in the spring with 8K’s and 1BB in 5 IP after showing flashes of his potential over a small four-start sample in 2021. Count Davidson among the many Braves upper-level pitching prospects who seem to carve at Triple-A, then struggle when they’re tasked with making a spot start in the majors. He first reached Gwinnett in 2019 and has a sub-3.00 ERA there, but he’s been walk-prone during his nine big league appearances and has had some rough starts. While he touches 97 mph, Davidson’s fastball sits mostly 92-94, and while it has a back-spinning axis, its angle causes it to play down a little but big league hitters have been able to get on top of it.

At the trade deadline this year, the Braves acquired reliever Raisel Iglesias from the Angels in exchange for veteran right-hander Jesse Chavez and lefty Tucker Davidson, which is why he’s starting again but it’s also a new lease on life. Davidson’s money pitch is his upper-80s slider, which has late vertical action. It was his most-used secondary in 2021 and Davidson has upped its frequency again this season. At age 26, he doesn't stick out as a prospect but he's another overlooked pitcher worthy of keeping an eye on.

We’re not betting Tucker Davidson, instead we’re fading another absurd tag here that is being placed on Seattle’s Marco Gonzales (LHP - SEA). Gonzles has posted a 3.95 ERA through 21 starts. However, that mark has been a giant illusion. His skills have been terrible (5.10 xERA, 6.33 xERA in his last five starts) and his 6.9% swing and miss rate and 58% first-pitch strike rate don't give them any growth potential. Gonzalez has a lousy 65 K’s in 118 innings with a below average groundball rate. He’s among the worst starters in baseball but he’s priced today like he’s pitching for the Dodgers against Pittsburgh. Geezus.
