Max Scherzer (RHP - NYM) is an underdog. Do we need to write more? On most nights that would be enough on its own, but we hope that we can mix a little “Mad Max” with a potentially tough spot for Atlanta. Scherzer is coming off a stellar, albeit limited start against the Reds where he mowed down 11 Cincinnati hitters with just two hits and one walk given up over six scoreless innings. Scherzer threw 79 pitches on a limited count, as it was his first start since mid-May, but he still was not satisfied saying he planned to see pitch 99 next time out.

The Braves played 12 grueling innings against the scrappy Nationals yesterday afternoon and while Atlanta got the win, it did so at a price, using five bullpen arms to seal the deal. Winning in walk-off fashion, as the Braves did, led to a celebration with Austin Riley getting the champagne bottle treatment at home plate. After that bullpen-taxing win, we are going to try and catch the Braves shorthanded, even with their ace on the mound.

Max Fried (LHP - ATL) was named to the All-Star team and while the honor is deserved, when facing the Cardinals in his last turn on July 6, Fried was pulled with what was described as some tightness in his right glute. Dude had butt problems. Hey, we’ve all been there. Fried is great and we’re not going to slag him, again, this is a situational wager.

Finally, maybe it’s nothing, but we’ll also mention that before he was sat down against St. Louis, Fried had four Ks, in six innings. He also had just four Ks over seven innings in Cincy. Not bad, but not up to his All-Star standard. While all things are not equal, as we wrote above, Scherzer just smoked the Reds with no problems. The Braves say Fried is fine and ready to roll. We’ll see. Regardless, we trust there is great value in the Mets tonight.
