Pittsburgh -105 over Arizona

7:05 PM EST. Perhaps Merrill Kelly (RHP - AZ) has outperformed his draft position (Round 8 in 2010) to earn a 4-year $21.2 million deal, but that does not mean he’s a quality starter. It just means the Diamondbacks are paying him, which is why he continues to get trotted out there. An average salary of $5.3 million might not seem like a lot in today’s game, but the Snakes are notoriously cheap. $5-mil might as well be $20-mil. Kelly was saddled with the loss against the Dodgers last Saturday after allowing three runs on seven hits, as well as two walks over five innings. The Diamondbacks are a pooch nearly every night, but not tonight. Why?

The Pirates are fresh off a three game sweep of the Dodgers in Los Angeles and the market perception here is that they are going to be due for a letdown after flying back to the East Coast for this three game set with the Diamondbacks. However, we disagree. When one sweeps the Dodgers, one cannot wait to get back to the ballpark.

JT Brubaker (RHP - PIT) is a workhorse and as steady as they come. In his last turn, on Saturday in San Diego, Brubaker was as solid as ever after going five innings and allowing just one unearned run on six hits while walking two. He didn’t factor into the decision, but the Pirates won that game on the back of his solid start. Brubaker is not sexy, but he’s solid. He comes in with an xERA of 3.48 and a strikeout rate that at one time would have made him a star (9.44 K/9). Dude is good for a punch out per inning but nobody talks about him. Brubaker and the Pirates are being disrespected here and one figures them to be chomping at the bit to take this giant step down in competition.
